HER STORY

Cristina Sheehan was born in Brisbane, Queensland, on 26 September 1998. The official Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) Rio profile describes her as Brisbane-based by 2016 and says that she had lived in Hong Kong for several years. There, she was a member of the Hong Kong synchronised national team for three years and won first place in the Asia Pacific Championship 12-and-under solo. This is the documented beginning of her international pathway; the sources do not name her first Australian junior club.

Her Queensland competitive progression was already evident before the Olympics. The archived AOC biography says she finished first in junior figures at the 2015 Queensland Championships, then won gold in figures and duet at the 2016 Australian Open Championships. She was selected at trials in Perth in April 2016 and, at 17, became the youngest member of Australia’s Rio synchronised-swimming team. The AOC’s current Olympian profile likewise describes Rio as her Olympic debut.

The club link is unusually well documented for a time-specific Olympic record. The 2016 AOC profile says Sheehan had trained with Gold Coast Mermaids under head coach Marina Kholod for the previous three years, and lists Gold Coast as her primary training base, with the Queensland Academy of Sport and AIS Canberra also recorded as training institutions/bases. Olympedia independently lists Gold Coast Mermaids, Gold Coast, as her affiliation. These records support a Gold Coast Mermaids connection during the Rio build-up, not an unverified claim about her present affiliation.

At Rio 2016 she competed in Australia’s women’s team event. The official AOC results page records 74.0667 for the technical routine on 18 August and 75.4333 for the free routine on 19 August, both eighth-place routines; the team finished eighth overall. Olympics.com and Olympedia each list one Games participation and an eighth-place team result. She was therefore a selected and competing Olympian, not a reserve or DNS athlete in the documented Rio event.

The Rio profile records that Sheehan was studying at the Queensland Academy of Maths, Science and Technology and hoped to pursue biochemistry or environmental engineering. Its short questionnaire lists bananas as a favourite food, ice-skating as the Olympic sport she would try, and explains that she liked synchronised swimming’s challenge and the fun of performing a routine with teammates. These are historical, source-documented interests rather than claims about her present study, career or hobbies. No opened authoritative source establishes her current status, so none is inferred here.

Beyond the pool

The archived Rio 2016 AOC profile records Sheehan studying at the Queensland Academy of Maths, Science and Technology and aspiring to a career in biochemistry or environmental engineering. Its questionnaire identifies bananas as a favourite food, ice-skating as the Olympic sport she would try, and the challenge and team performance of synchronised swimming as what attracted her. No opened authoritative source verifies a later qualification, occupation, current hobbies or current sporting status.

The current AOC profile, Olympics.com, Olympedia and World Aquatics agree that Sheehan's sole Olympic participation was Rio 2016 and that Australia's women's team placed eighth. The archived AOC Rio profile supplies the exact public birth date/place, selection status, technical/free routine scores, Gold Coast Mermaids and Marina Kholod connection, training bases, pre-Olympic achievements, education and questionnaire details. World Aquatics reports a Rio women's-team personal-best total of 149.5000; this file preserves the AOC routine scores and does not treat that total as a separate Olympic event. The opened ABC Tokyo 2020 (held in 2021) report discusses Australia's team and names contemporary athletes but does not identify Sheehan as selected or competing; Olympics.com lists only Rio 2016, so Tokyo is not added and no reserve/DNS status is asserted. No current club, career or life status is inferred. The existing Tamika Domrow file was checked after opening its archived source; it contains no unsupported previous-club claim requiring removal.
