THE MERMAIDS OLYMPIAN SERIES

Eloise Amberger

Eloise Amberger is an Australian artistic (formerly synchronised) swimmer who competed at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games. A Brisbane-born Queenslander, she partnered Sarah Bombell to a Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze and later contributed as an athlete and coach to Australian club swimming.

HER STORY

Born in Brisbane on 28 January 1987, Amberger was a state-level swimmer as a junior and had a strong interest in ballet and gymnastics. The Australian Olympic Committee describes that combination as a natural pathway into synchronised swimming; Commonwealth Games Australia records that she began competing in the discipline at 11 after seeing it on television.

A Canberra Cascades club biography states that Amberger made her first Australian national team at 15 and represented Australia for 11 years. It identifies Neptunes in Brisbane as her starting club and says she joined Gold Coast Mermaids when that club was formed, under coach Marina Kholod. Because this account is a club-published biography and does not give dates, it supports the connection but cannot establish a complete chronology of her clubs or imply that Gold Coast Mermaids alone developed her career.

Amberger’s international career included three World Championships and two World Cups according to the Canberra Cascades biography. World Aquatics’ record documents her participation-level personal-best performances at the 2007 FINA World Championships in team and duet free/technical events, and at the 2009 FINA World Championships in duet technical. The available World Aquatics page lists no medal total for her, so these results should not be presented as medals.

Her most prominent non-Olympic result came at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, where she and Sarah Bombell won bronze in the women’s artistic-swimming duet. The pair became a long-running partnership and were described by the AOC in 2012 as Australia’s best-performed synchronised swimmers at the time.

Amberger competed for Australia at Beijing 2008 and London 2012. In London, she and Bombell were selected for both the duet and team events. The AOC’s contemporary selection article says the pair had changed their routines and training approach after Delhi; it also records that Amberger was studying forensic science at university while preparing for London.

After London 2012, the Canberra Cascades biography says Amberger retired from competition and wanted to pass on her skills and knowledge to younger athletes. It records that she commenced coaching for Canberra Cascades in December 2017. A 2012 AOC report identifies her university study as forensic science; a contemporary published profile further describes an applied-science course majoring in forensic science and biochemistry at QUT, but the sources do not establish whether she completed the degree or her later career.

Beyond the pool

The AOC reported in February 2012 that Amberger was studying forensic science at university while preparing for London. A contemporary published profile describes this as a QUT Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in forensic science and biochemistry, but no reliable source reviewed here confirms completion or a subsequent occupation. The AOC profile notes earlier passions for ballet and gymnastics; the Canberra Cascades biography documents her later coaching interest and work with young athletes.

Primary AOC profile confirms Beijing 2008 and London 2012, the Olympic events, and the 2008 team 7th, London duet 23rd and team 8th results. Olympedia independently confirms birth details and all three Olympic placings, while World Aquatics confirms the documented World Championship personal-best entries. The Canberra Cascades page is a club biography and is the only opened source for the Neptunes-to-Gold Coast Mermaids pathway, first national-team age, three World Championships/two World Cups, retirement after London, and December 2017 coaching start; it gives no dates for the club transition, so the club relationship is deliberately qualified. Olympedia lists Dandee Dolphins as an affiliation, which is not reconciled by the sources reviewed. The AOC article says she studied forensic science; completion, later employment, and any current status are unverified. No reserve/alternate selection was found; the cited 2008 and 2012 records are competed Olympic appearances. Tokyo 2020 was not an edition in which she competed.
